Dr. Gary Fettke: The Role of Nutrition in Everything
In this video, Australian orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gary Fettke outlines the junk science that shapes our nutrition guidelines.
Fettkeâ??s presentation was part of CrossFitâ??s 2017 Health Conference, held Aug. 2 at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin.
â??I put my balls on the line today. â?¦ By continuing to speak out on the topic of nutrition, I am at risk of losing my registration as an orthopedic surgeon,â? Fettke tells a crowd of more than 400.
Fettke recommends a â??low-carb, healthy-fatâ? diet, which he says is in line with CrossFitâ??s recommendation to eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar.
â??I feel that the combination of fructose, refined carbohydrate and polyunsaturated oils is toxic, inflammatory and at the root cause of all disease that we look at,â? he says.
But because of his dietary recommendations, Fettke has been reported to Australiaâ??s medical board, much like Dr. Tim Noakes was attacked for challenging the establishment in South Africa. (Noakes also spoke at the Aug. 2 conference.)
â??The board have determined that it is inappropriate for me to let people know how to reverse Type 2 diabetes,â? Fettke explains. Nevertheless, he says, â??The message is too important to be silenced.â?
During his talk, which is equal parts biology lesson and food-industry history, Fettke speaks out against the ideological misinformation and vested interests that have corrupted how we eat.
â??With the right education,â? he says, â??my patients can be helped. The system can also be helped, and so can the environment and the planet.â?
