My Weight-Loss Transformation Success Story (after having twins!)
http://facebook.com/jenniferburgessfitness When I started my journey (this time around), I had just given birth to two baby boys. My twins were born on May 18, 2011, two months premature. It was a scary and emotional situation, and my husband and I spent the next five weeks driving back and forth to the NICU to see our babies. I had gained weight during the pregnancy, but now that the twins had been born and I was sent home without them, I turned to food to comfort me. Six weeks after delivery, I hadn't lost a single pound and felt fatter, thoroughly unhealthy and extremely depressed. It was soon after the boys came home that I was diagnosed with post partum depression. Dealing with depression AND an unhealthy body was just too much to bear, and I felt like I had a looooong journey ahead of me. I was always the strong one, the positive friend and motivator, and here I was at the bottom... feeling hopeless.
I am the Fitness Coordinator for a local university as well as a Beachbody Coach so I knew that I needed to get my body back in shape in order to be a positive example for others, but most importantly so I could start to love myself again. I've always battled with body image issues, and adding post partum depression to that was like a double-whammy. I honestly looked at the situation as if I had no choice BUT to get back in shape. I couldn't continue hating myself and the body of the person staring back at me in the mirror.
I am a Chalene Johnson junkie, so I knew that her positive energy was exactly what I needed. My "positivity tank" was on empty, and Chalene's motivation and encouragement would help me fill it back up and become the person I knew I was before the depression and weight gain. Plus, who can resist Turbo??? I decided to follow the TurboFire and ChaLEAN Extreme hybrid schedule because I knew I needed to lose weight, have fun and tone my muscles in the process. It was the perfect combination, and spending every morning with Chalene was a god-send.
TurboFire is fast-paced and energetic. I respond to music, and TurboFire's music can't be beat. It doesn't matter what kind of mood you're in, what's on your docket for the day or how tired you are; once you hear that music, you can't help but dance. Not to mention that the punching and kicking was definitely therapeutic. Haha. And following the weight workouts from ChaLEAN Extreme helped me to feel stronger and see my progress right in front of me on paper as I saw my weights increase with each passing week. Feeling stronger physically started to transition to feeling stronger emotionally.
The greatest challenge I faced was myself. My inner voice. She's the exact opposite of the real Jennifer Burgess. She cuts you down, speaks to you in a negative tone and tells you that you're "worthless" or "you will never get your body back." Learning how to identify that voice was the first step. Learning how to shut her up was the hardest challenge of all. I still argue with her from time to time, but I know that the person I am is stronger, healthier and happier than that inner voice. It's a day-to-day struggle, but I feel like I have the upper hand for the first time in my life. I can actually pay myself a compliment now! I can admit when I've done well at something or pushed extra hard through a challenging workout. These are all things I could NEVER have done 9 months ago.
And the results? Wow - where to begin? Well, first of all, I got my body back. I still have a little toning to do but, for someone who gave birth to TWINS just 9 months ago, I certainly can't complain. It feels so great when I tell people I have twins and they say that I look good, and then they ask me how old they are and they say I look GREAT. But it's not all about the physical change. Being able to find love for myself and control my depression has been the greatest achievement for me. Physical, mental and emotional strength... all from pushing play every day. It's incredible, and I am so proud of myself for sticking with it and getting where I am today.
