What is Obesity and Why is it a Major Health Threat?


Obesity is rapidly becoming acknowledged as one of mankind's worst health problems. Once principally confined to the western world, obesity is now being seen in those countries experiencing a rapid improvement in living standards. Such is the problem that the World Health Organization fears a world-wide obesity epidemic is close.

What Causes Obesity
Obesity is defined as being more than 20% above the weight recommended for a person of that height. It's caused by an accumulation of excess fat within the body, and results in a Body Mass Index above 30. This figure is used throughout the medical profession to indicate a person's weight status.

A person consumes too much fat by regularly eating a diet high in calories, fat, sugar - 'junk' food in other words. Food that is totally lacking in nutritional value.

Together with a life-style devoid of regular physical exercise, these are the two major factors causing a person to be overweight, and a person grossly overweight is known by the medical term as 'obese'.

A serious form of obesity - when a person is so obese it affects their day to day activities such as movement and mobility - is known as morbid obesity, or extreme obesity, a condition that can eventually lead to many serious life threatening conditions.

Obesity is a Serious Risk to Health
Body fat has a vital and essential role in ensuring a person is kept in good health and its presence is considered by nutritionists and the medical fraternity as being one of the crucial factors of a healthy and balanced diet. However, the consumption of excessive quantities of fat leads to a number of serious health conditions.

The most serious of these conditions is type 2 diabetes, a condition that can eventually lead to loss of limbs, blindness, and finally death. A person suffering from obesity can expect to live about 9 years LESS than a healthy, non-obese person. This alone shows that obesity should be avoided at all costs.

Obesity Prevention is Simple, Painless, and Possible
However, with the majority of sufferers, obesity prevention is a possibility - the condition can be controlled and eventually eliminated by following a strict change of life-style.

By eating a regular diet of healthy food, in moderate portions, fat will be absorbed into the body as a normal matter of course, whilst the excess fat that the body cannot use is worked off during a person's daily routine, including a time set aside for regular exercise such as a walk, a jog, or participating in an active sport such as tennis or squash.

A regular diet of 'junk' food and drink, saturated with fats and sugar, and lacking in nutritional qualities, together with no regular exercises can only lead to one result - a health crisis caused by an excess of fat within the body. And the only way to address this problem is to make some serious life-style changes - that is by eating a healthier diet at all times; exercising daily; and do this in consultation with a health care professional.
