Lifestyle changes are the best


Beware all fad diet book promotions. They come with their honied words, "Just take this or do that". The marketers airbrush out all those inconvenient little truths about how hard it is to lose weight. Everything will be hunky dory if you just pay the cover price on this book. The reminder came through a new weight loss program released this July. "Lose twice as much as those following other diet programs." ". . .the results far exceed". Where have we heard all these well-tried phrases before? Well, whenever you see the promotion for a new product or program. The only difference this time around is the claim of a scientific trial. The team followed 1850 people for seven years, counting their calories and monitoring their weight. Here are the numbers. . . So many pounds lost here. . . but for our miracle product. . . There was just the one ray of hope in the whole PR strategy. It referred to behavioral programs. This is slightly unusual. PR people don't mention the real competition.

The sad fact is weight gain has continued on an epic scale despite the growth of the diet and weight loss industry. If this industry was the best way of preventing the spread of obesity, it should have worked by now. But walking through a mall shows just how many people are now carrying those extra pounds. So the first step is an acknowledgement that losing weight is not just about the food. Sure, you have to cut down on the portion sizes and eating a more healthy diet is good for you, but it's not enough on its own. So what's the best way forward?

OK, so here come all those annoying questions: where do you eat, when do you eat, how do you eat, and why do you eat? And before you come on with the, "I only eat when I'm hungry", ask yourself, honestly, when you last felt hungry. This is what behavioral programs are all about. They ask you what motivates you to eat. They ask you the hard questions. But, if you don't understand why you eat, you can't change the behavior. So, how do you feel about your life? How does food fit into that? What relationships do you have? Are they successful? Awareness is everything. Only then can you make lifestyle changes for the long-term. The word is done-to-death. But this is "empowering". You have to take charge of your life. Only then can you eat less and mean it.
