The good news is that organic pet food is becoming more regularly available in major stores and pet shops. You can choose from exciting flavours that include organic meats, fish and vegetables. In fact the Organic Trade Association report that organic pet food sales are growing at close to three times the rate of human organic food sales. But not everyone flocks to the shops for organic pet food, some adventurous pet owners actually prefer to prepare their own organic pet food rather than rely on shop bought brands. The benefits of making your own pet food are that you know exactly what has gone into it, and you can be sure it's all good quality natural ingredients. You can include choice cuts of meats, your favourite vegetables and even some dietary supplements. However, if you're going to make your own pet food - be sure you know what you're doing. Homemade food has to meet all your pet's dietary needs: a cat is classed as an obligate carnivore and requires at least forty one essential nutrients for a healthy body, while a dog is an omnivore and requires thirty seven essential nutrients. It is therefore important to research what the best ingredients are for your pet and consult your vet. It's also important to remember that dogs and cats have particularly sensitive stomachs; they cannot eat everything that humans enjoy. It is vital to keep your pet healthy - and a balanced diet is the best way to do it. An estimated 50% of pets in the UK are overweight, and you don't want your pet to become part of this statistic. However, if your pet is classified as obese don't panic. Your local vet will be able to recommend a particular food and the best course of action to get your pet back in shape. If your pet has been confirmed to have special dietary requirements don't forget to check your pet insurance policy, as it may well help to cover costs incurred by your pet's specific diet. Remember though, if your pet needs to go on a special diet as a result of obesity, insurers will not tend to cover this unless it has a clinical cause. The best way to keep your pet in shape is by giving them a healthy diet. Whether that's organic or not, your pet will be a happier companion if it is fed regularly with good quality food.
