Fast weight loss diets often encourage people to do things to lose weight which are actually counter productive. One of the things people often do is stop eating. The reason for this is that when you don't eat you burn muscle rather than fat. This will certainly help you to lose weight but it is not the kind of weight that you want to lose. The reason that you have to make sure that you are not burning muscle is that muscle helps you to burn calories. The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn throughout the day. If your body is not getting enough calories it will decide that it can't continue to support the muscle that you currently have. At this point it will start to burn the muscle as a fuel source to protect the fat. Not only will this leave you looking bad it will make it harder to burn fat in the future since you will have less muscle to use up the calories that you consume. Rather than skipping meals in an attempt to lose weight you are actually far better off eating more frequently. Obviously you will want to eat smaller meals but you should be eating five to six times a day. This will ensure that your muscles have the calories that they need to support them and it will allow your body to burn fat for energy instead. Ideally over the course of a day you should be reducing your calorie consumption to a few hundred fewer than you need to maintain your current weight level, this is the ideal amount for losing weight.
