Many may say no, 'Christmas did not make me fat,' while others suggest yes, 'yes it did,' but I am going to open your eyes to the possibility of it being true. Remember, I'm the expert. Let us start with a simple scenario where a woman gained just two pounds of fat each Christmas and failed to change any diet or exercise habits. How long would it take for her to be considered obese? Jessica (our imaginary person) weighs 110 lbs, is 5'4" and 20 years old, putting her in the normal percentile for women. Fast forward 20 years later and Jessica is now considered overweight; 30 years later she is considered obese. You may think that a 20 or 30 year time frame is too long to even worry about, but they still pose a realistic threat to you and your health for the following reasons: 1.) Weight gain is less obvious over long periods of time. 2.) There is less psychological trauma (the 'I'm fat' realization) due to slow adaption factors. 3.) Age is used as a scapegoat instead of lifestyle related factors. How can such a downward spiral towards obesity be prevented from happening each Christmas? The answer is actually quit simple: stay active and monitor body fat regularly. It's surprising how seldom people choose to monitor their body fat percentage and instead turn to the unreliable scale in their bathroom. Five tips to stay active after Christmas: 1.) Join a fitness program at your local gym. They are expecting people just like you and have special programs for the occasion. Doing so will offer both professional and moral support that is vital to your fitness success. 2.) Participate in out-door activities with family. Along with it being fun, you will hardly notice the effort you put forth. 3.) Walk at least 20 minutes each day. If you have a dog he/she will love you even more for this. 4.) Park a good distance from the store or supermarket. Force yourself to walk more when possible. 5.) Get a friend to join you in your active lifestyle. Having a friend with similar fitness goals is the perfect tool to keep yourself on track. Three easy ways to monitor body fat: 1.) Use a mirror to view your body fat. If you look good in the mirror what good does it do to weigh yourself? 2.) Hire a professional to monitor body fat using more advanced methods than your scale. 3.) Purchase a scale with bio-electrical impedance technology or SKF calipers made for personal use. Don't look like Santa next Christmas! Use this information, and use it wisely.
