How They Produce It As the same as gonadotropins, HCG can be extracted from urine or by genetic modification. The products Pregnyl, Follutein, Profasi, Choragon and Novarel use the urine extraction method from pregnant women while Ovidrel is a product of recombinant DNA. HCG is produced from the syncytiotrophoblast cell layer. Uses It can be used as a tumor marker, as its beta subunit is secreted by some cancers. For this reason a positive result in males can be a test for testicular cancer. It can also be used for fertility purposes. It is extensively used as an ovulation inducer. In the presence of one or more mature ovarian follicles, ovulation can be triggered by the administration of HCG or by HCG Injections. It can also be used for weight loss no matter how controversial this kind of usage is.
