Part of a healthy lifestyle is eating healthy foods. Eat healthy foods to achieve your optimum weight and keep your weight under control. Lifestyle changes to lose weight and maintain a good weight for your height includes regular exercise and a nutritious, balanced diet. People need to eat a variety of foods for maximum nutritional benefit. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and whole grains, such as oats and cracked wheat, for breakfast can help get you off to a good start every day. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products when shopping for food. Instead of eating potato chips, try some low-fat cheese, whole wheat crackers and fat-free yogurt if you get hungry between meals. Eat less red meat. Fish, chicken, legumes, rice and eggs can provide all the protein that your body needs for healthy muscles and energy. Cut down on your sodium intake and avoid sugary snacks and breakfast cereals. Don't consume more calories than your body needs for energy and normal functioning. The average adult needs to consume about 2,000 per day. Nursing mothers should eat about 2,500 calories per day. Athletes may want to increase their carbohydrates prior to a sporting event. Fruits are more than just apples, bananas and oranges. Try adding fruits to your diet that you may not have tried before. Mangos, kiwi and pineapple are delicious and packed with nutrients that your body needs to burn fat and maintain healthy cells. Avoid canned or processed fruits. Many of these products contain added sugars and preservatives that your body does not need. The extra sugar can undermine your health goals and cause you to gain weight. If you buy canned fruit, look for fruits that are packed in natural juices without added sugar. Fresh vegetables are better than canned vegetables. Most canned vegetables contain extra sodium and preservatives. There are many delicious ways to prepare vegetables. Try steamed, grilled or sautéed vegetables instead of boiling them. Avoid fried foods. Frying vegetables in saturated oil will add extra fats to your diet and breaks down nutrients in the vegetables. Add a new vegetable to your diet every month. Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, and zucchini are delicious and healthy alternatives to corn and beans. Grill or bake meats like fish and chicken to help reduce calories from added fats. Fried foods, butter, margarine and oils can add unhealthy fats to your diet. Baked breaded chicken or grilled chicken is a healthy alternative to fried chicken.
