For a bride to be, fitting into the ideal wedding dress is a dream-come-true. Many women want to lose a few extra pounds and slim down for their Big Day. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to shed those pre-nuptial pounds. There are many aspects to personal fitness: what types of work-outs to do; how often to work-out; how much to work-out; what, how much, and how often to eat; etc. There are two main types of workouts: aerobic/cardio and anaerobic/weights. When doing aerobic exercises you should be at your target heart-rate for AT LEAST 20 minutes (with a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down, totaling AT LEAST 30 minutes) a day, 4-6 times a week. Target heart rate is a better indicator of how hard you're working than how far or how fast you run/bike, etc, and it is geared to you no matter what level of fitness you are. To calculate your target heart-rate, take 220, subtract your age, and then take 70-85% of that. Example: I am 28 (shh, don't tell anyone!) so my maximum heart-rate is 192 beats per minute (bpm). My target heart-rate zone is 134-163 beats per minute. So for my work out I should be at least to 134 bpm after 5 minutes and up to 163 shortly after that, and staying there for 20 minutes. Doing this for 4-6 times a week will get you well on your way to fitting into your wedding dress. Lifting weights is also very helpful in burning fat. The more muscle you have, the more energy your body needs to sustain it. Most brides don't want to bulk up, though, and so the right kind of weight lifting is important. Targeting those problem areas like abs, arms, or glutes is helpful. Since slimming and sculpting is the goal for most brides, make sure you do 3-5 sets of 10-15 reps for every exercise you do. High reps will help build lean muscle and burn fat without getting bulky. Adequate rest is important! Make sure you're not working the same muscle group 2 days in a row. *(Always stretch before AND AFTER every physical exertion, be it weights or cardio!) When deciding what and how to eat, it is important to understand how the body works. If you want to burn fat and fit into that dream wedding dress, you need to be expending more calories than you are eating. This is called caloric deficit. Eating the right calories is important too. Make sure to stay away from fatty and greasy foods. Eat lots of veggies and stay away from cheap, processed carbs (white bread, white pasta, frozen dinners, etc). Make sure your meals are more frequent and smaller than normal. Five small meals is always better than 3 regular sized meals. This will make your body use the food more efficiently, and you will be less likely to store it as fat reserves. If you do these things, then you will be on your way to the wedding body you want, allowing you to reserve your mental faculties for picking out the dinner plates and napkins for your reception rather than stressing over the last 5 pounds you want to lose.
